European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
