'Sweet game'
Mary Prior KC, handling the case, detailed the criminal behavior to the court.
She said his those affected were under-privileged children who were participating in a youth camp which he ran.
The defendant conducted a "sweet game" with the children, the legal counsel explained, in which he would access the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and tell them to consume candy "rapidly".
She informed the proceedings the defendant had played this game with the young males "repeatedly", and minors had previously become sick the subsequent day.
She stated the man had been successful in rationalizing this over a long period as the children being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepchild had suspicions in recently.
Mrs Prior KC continued: "Recently" his stepson had suspicions about the activities, justifiably.
"They chose" to examine in the man's possessions."
The prosecutor stated objects including baby oil, petroleum jelly and medical needles were found, and his family member contacted the authorities about his suspicions.
She explained the man continued to conduct the "sweet game" with six youngsters that time - that Saturday - and they were all sick the next day.
"The police had not arrived by that point," she continued.
The oversight body, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, had stated that it was examining Leicestershire Police's handling of the situation.
The prosecutor said the youngsters were unable to walk properly due to being ill, so the family member called the police once more.
She stated the man then engaged in the "candy game" in a space of five youngsters.
